Your First Game

Ren’Py games are distributed as archives (usually ZIP or APK files) containing the game files. You’ll need to obtain a game archive before importing it into Spark.

Common sources include:

  • itch.io — Many free and paid visual novels
  • Game developer websites
  • Android APK files from games you own

Use Spark’s built-in import menu to add games:

  1. Open Spark and tap the Import button in the library
  2. The system file picker will appear — browse to your game archive
  3. Select the file and Spark will extract and import the game automatically

Once imported, the game will appear in your library with:

  • Auto-detected game title
  • Suggested Ren’Py engine version
  • A color tag (default: blue)

Tap the game to launch it. The first launch may take a moment as Spark configures the engine.

  • Game doesn’t appear after import? — Check Import Problems
  • Game crashes on launch? — See Game Crashes
  • APK file appears grayed out? — Disable file filtering in Settings > Game Library
